Before you bring your puppy home, there are some things you will need to do first to make sure your house is a puppy safe environment. Be sure you have all the things you will need so you won’t have to go to the store and leave your puppy home alone and unattended. In the beginning, puppies need someone around to help them adjust to being away from their brothers, sisters and especially, Mommie. The following list is all of the necessities you will need for your new puppy:

  • Soft Puppy Bed
  • Collar – Buckle Type
  • Tag with Phone Number and Address
  • Leash – Six Feet Long
  • Ceramic Food Bowls*
  • Dog Food
  • Dog Toys
  • Chew Toys
  • Dog Treats
  • Crate or Carrier if Crate Training

*Use ONLY ceramic bowls!
Plastic bowls are porous and collect food in the pores. That food rots and creates bacteria. When your dog eats his food from a bacteria infested bowl, he might develop a form of acne on his chin. This will require a vet trip, where the veterinarian will shave the affected area, lance the pimples, and you will have to treat your dog with a dog acne topical cream.

Check your house to make sure it is “puppy proofed”, meaning all items you don’t want chewed on are picked up, and there are no strings or bad things he could eat. Puppies are curious and get into everything.

Establish where you will feed your puppy and set up the water and food bowl. Feed your puppy a food specially made for puppies, not adult dogs. Puppies are growing and need extra calcium and fat. Nutro Max puppy food is all natural. Puppies should have food available all day long, until he gets older. Leave dry food in a bowl and refill as necessary.

Place your puppy’s bed and toys in a place where he can get to them whenever he wants them. You may want his bed near your own bed, so he can sleep near you at night.

When you get your puppy, put his collar on with the tag. This is so he will get used to wearing a collar, and if he manages to escape, the person who finds him will be able to return him to you.
